Be unique this Valentines Day

Instead of going through the motions, be unique this Valentines Day!

One might say that Valentines Day is the epitome of cheesiness, but naysayers need love too. So go ahead and skip the candlelight dinner, roses and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, and try one of these cynic-proof Valentines Day ideas.

1. Burlesque Show

Spend this Valentines Day getting sultry by taking your date to a burlesque show. These old-timey acts are more sexy than skanky (think feather boas, long gloves, fans and tasseled pasties). Talented performers often accompany the campy humor and killer costumes.

2. Indoor Picnic

Skip the restaurant scene, where you’ll inevitably be stuck with an overpriced pre-fixed menu and a seat that leaves you knee-to-knee with other star-crossed lovebirds. Spend your Valentines Day dinner enjoying an indoor picnic instead. Spread out the blanket, break out the fancy accouterments — and don’t forget the bubbly. Phoenix hasn’t been all that warm lately so why not be comfy on a rug…maybe even light the fireplace.

3. “Glamping”
Let’s face it: camping isn’t always sexy (bug spray and outdoor toilets can be a romance buzzkill, to say the least). But “glamping” (glamorous camping) can make for the ultimate Valentines Day staycation. Pitch a tent (not that kind) in the backyard or even the bedroom, whip up a batch of s’mores, light up the fireplace (on DVD) and get all cozy in that sleeping bag for deux.

4. Roller Skating
Most dates will be hitting the ice skating rink come Valentines Day, so go old school by taking your date roller skating instead. Bust out your tube socks and short shorts — the roller rink makes for a super-fun Valentines Day setting. You can hang out in the arcade, buy your date a candy necklace, and get cozy for a couple’s skate.

5. Bowling
Bowling may not reek of romance, but c’mon, it’s fun! Throw back a few cold ones, grab some junk food and settle in for some healthy competition this Valentine’s Day. Make things a little more interesting by keeping score and promising the winner a Valentine’s Day “prize.”

6. Comedy Show
Some say laughter is an aphrodisiac, and who are we to argue with that logic? Also, what better way to celebrate Valentines Day than to laugh your butt off? Grab a date and head to the nearest comedy club for an off-the-grid VDay experience.

7. Hot Yoga
Flexible? Get steamy with a Valentines Day “hot yoga” class for two. The flow of the poses in the heated room will increase blood flow and boost your endorphins — plus your partner will look sexy in a sweaty downward dog. The best part? A shower is absolutely necessary after this type of class, so make it a shower for two.

8. Concert

Skip the opera this Valentines Day and head straight for the ultimate rock-n-roll date: take your Valentine to see his or her favorite band. Or just hit up a local music venue for a live show. Seeing Jay-z or Fun. is a perfectly romantic Valentines Day gift.

9. Sexy Scavenger Hunt
Design a sexy scavenger hunt for your honey this Valentines Day. Create clues that lead to special places you’ve been together and reward them with sexy prizes. (Try recreating your first kiss.) Bonus: This can be completely free, and you’ll score major points for creativity.

10. Salsa Dancing
You don’t have to watch “Dancing with the Stars” to know that salsa is super sexy. Work off your Valentines Day dinner by hitting up a Latin club, or take a lesson for two. Online deal sites like and often offer coupons on dance lessons, so check before hit the dance floor.

Wedding Registry Mistakes

We’d like to help you avoid some of the most common wedding registry mistakes. During our time of getting to know so many wedding couples, we’ve heard a number of them talk about their wedding gift lists, specifically the problems they’re having with them and what they’d do differently if they could register for gifts all over again.

Here are the wedding registry mistakes we hope you’ll keep at the forefront of your mind as you create your bridal registries and also as you maintain your lists now until your wedding day, and even afterward:

1. Registering for too few items. That’s right, wedding couples who don’t want to appear greedy to their friends and family limit their wedding registry lists to just a handful of items, which not only keeps them from receiving everything they’ll need to set up their home, but also leaves wedding guests without enough gift options in their budget to choose from. Don’t be shy. Sign on for lots of wedding gift possibilities, and guests will be more likely to be grateful than offended.

Only having one registry. With so many unique registries out there, don’t limit yourself to just one kind of wedding registry. Look into creating a honeymoon registry, charitable registry, a registry at a local sporting goods store if you like to enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle as so many of our Phoenix Arizona  do, a wine registry, or other type of wedding gift list.

2. Registering in a single price range. Load up your list with lots of gifts in a very affordable price range, such as under $50, and then add items in the $50 to $100 price range, some in the $100 to $200 price range, and follow the new wedding registry trend of adding a few big-ticket items that can be given to you by groups, such as your bridal party (who are each saving money by splitting the cost of a pricy gift for you! That $400 coffee maker is just $40 apiece if there are 10 bridesmaids and groomsmen giving the gift together!)

3. Not signing on for gift cards. Again, it doesn’t make you look greedy to ask for 10 $50 gift cards, 10 $100 gift cards and so on. Guests know that you’ll need to buy some household essentials after the wedding, items you didn’t get for bridal shower gifts, and gift cards let you do so without guilt.

4. Choosing the wrong delivery address. If you live in an apartment, you don’t want these valuable gifts being delivered to your entryway with no doorman able to take them in for you. It may be smarter to have all of your wedding gifts delivered to your parents’ home, where they can take them in and protect them for you.

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Did your New Year resolutions make our top ten list?

1. Spend More Time with Family & Friends

Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others shows that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year. Make plans to meet up with friends for an evening of camaraderie at a favorite Phoenix restaurant or take the family to one of these popular Phoenix places for family fun. Work shouldn’t always come first!

2. Fit in Fitness

The evidence is in for fitness. Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better. Why not make this the time to start getting in shape for one of these popular Phoenix runs, walks or rides.

 3. Tame the Bulge

Over 66 percent of adult Americans are considered overweight or obese by recent studies, so it is not surprising to find that weight loss is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of Americans who made a New Year’s commitment to shed extra pounds.

4. Quit Smoking

If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you’ve tried to quit before and failed, don’t let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good. Start enjoying the rest of your smoke-free life! Even Maricopa County is smoke-free, and it’s taken them a few tries as well to get there. Locally, there are a variety of free support services, hotlines and smoking cessation classes to help you kick the smoking habit.

5. Enjoy Life More

Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of Americans, it is no wonder that “enjoying life more” has become a popular resolution in recent years. It’s an important step to a happier and healthier you! Consider one of Phoenix’s holistic healing centers for products designed to bring balance to your body, mind and soul. Or just get out and try something new! Take up a new hobby or try your hand at skiing. Go to a theater performance, or head to the local spa. Phoenix offers a wealth of artistic and recreational activities to meet just about anyone’s wishes.

6. Quit Drinking

While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available. Phoenix Alcoholics Anonymous offers meetings throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. There is also a Pittsburgh group for Parents of Teenage Alcohol and Drug Abusers. There are also a number of treatment-based programs, as well as support groups for families of alcoholics.

7. Get Out of Debt

Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of Americans who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It’s a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

8. Learn Something New

Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you’ll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year’s resolutions to keep. Rio Salado Community College offers a wide variety of “lifelong learning” courses, and local YMCA’s offer great recreational training for beginners of all ages. Most local colleges and universities offer distance and adult education programs. Or if the arts are more your thing, places such as the Mesa Arts Center and the Arizona Actors Academy are great places that provide the proper lessons for you to start your acting debut.

9. Help Others

A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help. Phoenix Volunteers makes it easy by connecting volunteers with projects to fit practically any schedule. Or if your time is really in short supply, maybe you can at least find it in you to donate the furniture, clothing and other household items that you no longer need, rather than leaving them out by the curb to fill up our landfills.

10. Get Organized

On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and resources should get you started on the way to a more organized life. Phoenix has quite a few professional organizers who can help you reduce the clutter in your life and find peace in your home.

How to wrap the perfect gift!

How to Wrap a Perfect Gift thumbnail
Wrapping a gift beautifully is a process.

A beautifully wrapped gift contains more than the present inside the package. Perfectly wrapping a gift means paying attention to the components that comprise gift wrapping. With each step, from box to bow, you will see the ideal in your head meet with the product of your careful efforts. You can wrap a perfect gift.

  1. Box and Paper

Choose a box. The right box should accommodate tissue paper with room for your gift to easily fit inside.

Select wrapping paper, matching ribbon and a bow that suits the occasion and the recipient. You may want a solid color or paper with patterns. The Container Store recommends selecting paper with small print for small packages and larger print for larger boxes.

Line the box with tissue paper. Allow enough to hang over the sides of the box. Place the gift in the box. Wrap the tissue paper over the gift. Put the top on the box.

Spread or unroll a sheet of wrapping paper on the table. Place the box upside down on the paper. Situate the box on the paper so that it will fold across the box and overlap on the bottom (which is facing up) of the box. Leave enough paper on the ends of the box to fold and cover the ends of the box.

    • 5

Fold the paper with one side over about an inch of the box bottom, and tape in place. Wrap the paper all the way around the box, over the secured side and even with the edge of the box. Secure with two-sided tape.

    • 6

Turn the box right-side up. Push in the sides of each end, creasing the top and bottom of the paper in toward the box ends. Fold the bottom end of the paper up, and fold the top end of the paper downward to cover the bottom end that is taped to the box. Fold the top edge of the paper so that it aligns with the bottom of the box end. Tape in place.

Keys For A Successful Holiday Party

Not everyone likes to attend the company holiday party…after all you work with the people day in and day out and most likely you see them more than your own family. Here are a few tips that will help make your holiday company more enjoyable and less of a headache.
